Step 11- Warning Signs in Dating and What to Do with Them

Image
“Now you’re looking for the secret. But you won’t find it because of course, you’re not really looking. You don’t really want to work it out. You want to be fooled. –Cutter, The Prestige The following signs don’t necessarily mean it won’t work out, but they are red flags that need to be addressed quickly if you see them. Hopefully, if they are addressed quickly, your relationship will be saved in the long run.   The warning signs to follow are what you may find in a Christian relationship.  (These don't include dating a non-beliver , dating someone who pressures you sexually, dating someone is on a totally different page than you in terms of denomination and theology, or dating someone who physically abuses you.  I think it goes without saying that these are obvious signs not to date someone... but I thought I'd mention them nonetheless).  Don’t put your hope in a person Take notice if someone is looking to you for fulfillment and purpose and/or if y...

Step 10- Waiting

Image
“I’m not standing still. I am lying in wait.”- Aaron Burr, Hamilton Learn by Example One person who knew much about waiting for God’s plan to be established was Queen Esther.  To recap the story as quickly as possible: Esther lived with her cousin Mordecai, who was a gatekeeper for the palace and took Esther in as his own daughter after her parents died. The king was looking for a wife and Esther was brought into the palace along with others for the King to choose from. (As a side note, Mordecai had discovered a plot to kill the king and reported it thus saving the king’s life, and he had an enemy named Haman who wanted to kill Mordecai and all the Jewish people). Ultimately, Esther was chosen to be the queen and saves her cousin along with ALL the Jewish people, while defeating their enemies. There are a few things I think we can note of from Esther’s success in waiting: She had other people looking out for her and partnering with her. Esther 2:11: (ESV): “And eve...

Step 9- Iron Sharpens Iron

“Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.”- Wicked  Proverbs 15:22 (ESV) Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed. I can't explain all the ways that people's prayers, words, and presence has meant to me in both the bad and the good times.  I'm probably about to say a bunch of cliché quotes that could go on someone's bathroom wall.  However, u nlike a lot of other girls, I'm not one to have a "best friend," but I haven't been with a lack of friends.  God has been so generous to bring all the people I need just at the time I needed it most.   I can remember as a child, my mom would talk to her friends on the phone, and I assumed I would grow up and do the same.  Well I'm a full grown adult, and I rarely ever call anyone, but I've made it a goal this year to be a better friend and appreciate those around me.  I've even joined a DNA group (small group of 3-4 people that meets from church) that meets ...

Step 8- Pray for Men and Fight the Enemy

“Something's coming…Something hungry for blood. A shadow grows on the wall behind you, swallowing you in darkness. It is almost here. - Mike Wheeler, Stranger Things

" The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy .  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." John 10:10 (ESV)

Spiritual Warfare Ephesians 6:12 (ESV)  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

I strangely got more excited about this topic than any of the other of the 12 steps to following God as single woman .  Something kind of odd or special about me is that I love and desire to go into the darkest places to help people.  I know some women who are true servants, like my mom, and I envy and desire that quality, but I wouldn't say that I possess it.  If you ask me to clean up or watch...

Step 7- Letting Go and Preparing Yourself

“These walls were not meant to shut out problems. You have to face them. You have to live the life you were born to live.”- Mother Abbess, The Sound of Music No Root of Bitterness Hebrews 12:14-17: Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears. As the old saying goes, “you can’t drink poison and expect it to kill your enemy.” It took me a long time to understand that not forgiving people only hurts you. “Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the door of resentment and the handcuffs of hate. Forgiveness breaks the chains of bittern...
